An O-ring MUST be deformed to function properly. If an O-ring is not squeezed and stretched in its application it most likely is the wrong O-ring. A general guideline for a good O-ring design is to maintain a 10-40% squeeze for static and no more than 30% for dynamic application. The O-ring Volume should not exceed 90% Gland Void to allow the Oring to deform.
